Everything Changes

November 15, 2008

I checked my voicemail this afternoon at work and found my son had left me a message.  This child who never uses a phone actually called me and left a message.  He wanted to let me know that he had been accepted to Baylor University.  I was sitting at my desk with tears and sniffles.  My baby is grown up, when did this happen?  I am so proud of everything he has accomplished.  I won’t take credit for it because he is definitely his own person and has shown much maturity and reasoning abilities.

But I sat there for several minutes recalling bits and pieces from the past and wishing I could have some of them back.  I remember how he called himself “Baby Cory” until his sister Sara came along at 2 1/2 years.  He took to calling her “Baby Sara” and I can still hear his little voice talking to his sister.  I remember seeing him with his best friend right before they became best friends at 6 & 7 years old.  They were playing on the playground and decided to swing and held hands trying to stay together.  Or the time in 6th grade when he came home with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and read it in a weekend!  To just last weekend when I drove 3 1/2 hours to Arlington to watch him run his last Cross Country race of his High School career in a 15 minute race.  He did a great job, beating out at least 80 other kids running to come in the top 25!

I’m very proud of him and all he has accomplished and all that he will become.  He is a remarkable kid, he will always be my baby and I’ll always be his Mother.  And that’s ok, as long as I let him fly!
