Facebook and High School

March 14, 2009

Facebook should probably be called “High School Reunion”.  I reluctantly started using Facebook because of the kids.  If they are going to be on it, then we are going to be on it monitoring what they are up to.  I did not expect the end result being finding old friends.

Last week I had a wonderful opportunity to get together for a mini-reunion with 6 other friends from High School.  Some I had some contact with over the years, some I had not seen since I left school.  I wish we had had more time to just sit and talk.  I could not believe all of the memories that came rushing back and all of the stupid things we did as kids.

Now I have one graduating High School in June and I just can’t wrap my head around that.  He’s 18, he’s an adult.  He’s making his decisions about his future.  How did this happen?  I know I’ve seen it all and been here to witness this transformation, but it still does not seem at all possible.  In 20 years will he sit with friends from long ago and have the same realizations.  I’m sure he will.

His High School experience has been very different and in many ways much more stable and successful than mine.  I hope he has enjoyed the ride and looks back on it with some fondness.  But he’s the type that won’t wish for it to be different, he has constructed it to be the way that he wants and I hope that makes him happy.

SPF Friday – The Best Gift You’ve Ever Received

December 5, 2008

I thought long and hard about this Assignment, the first one I have ever participated in from Random and Odd.  I considered all of the gifts I’ve received that I could remember.  Lots of options, but how do I choose one?  Then all of a sudden it dawned on me, the best gift I ever received was the gift of lifelong friendship, it’s intangible.  It’s not something that you can hold in your hand and look at…it just is.  Unconditional friendship!

So here is a picture of me and my best friend, we are the ones in the middle.  This was taken in October around our birthdays (we are 364 days apart in age) on our first ever real vacation together.   We have known each other about 30 years and have seen each other through all kinds of stuff.
